Environmental law has always fascinated Paula Cotter, the NAAG Environment and Energy counsel for the last 12 years. “It has a connection to every part of American life: industry, agriculture, urban life, and wilderness,” she explained. Paula organizes legal training sessions for energy and environmental issues. She recently assembled conferences on alternative energy sources, concentrated animal feed law, and issues in waste management. She has also been involved with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to coordinate activities between the Attorneys General staff and the DOE staff.
“I work on pollution control, energy-oriented issues, and conservation issues,” she said. Paula serves as the point person for communication between states about local environmental issues, interacting regularly with offices of the Attorneys General.
In addition to a slate of environmental issues, Paula has been organizing a training partnership of NAAG with the National White Collar Crimes Center. She is currently managing a series of 17 one-day training sessions on intellectual property. This training is available for the Attorneys General, local prosecutors, investigators, and law enforcement officials.
An Ohio native, Paula attended both undergraduate and law school at The Ohio State University. Before coming to the NAAG, Paula worked in the Ohio Attorney General’s office and as a consultant.
As an English major, Paula’s hobby is still settling down with a good novel. “I’m an open book,” she says with a smile.
