NAGTRI Advisory Board Holds Inaugural Meeting

The National Attorneys General Training and Research Institute (NAGTRI) Advisory Board held its inaugural meeting Aug. 4 - 5 at New York University Law School in New York City. The newly-formed Board’s mission is to provide advice, counsel, and expertise regarding NAGTRI course development and to discuss how NAGTRI can continue to best serve the offices of the Attorneys General. The Board consists of 28 representatives from 27 Attorneys General offices including chief deputies, chiefs of staff, training coordinators, and deputy and assistant attorneys general.

Envisioned when NAGTRI was created by the NAAG executive committee in 2007, the Board is providing informed feedback on NAGTRI’s current course and research offerings and on the development of future offerings. NAAG Deputy Executive Director and NAGTRI Director Chris Toth began the meeting by offering a NAGTRI overview and outlining the meeting objectives. During a very productive roundtable group discussion, facilitated by Rhode Island Deputy Attorney General Jerry Coyne and Georgia Chief Deputy Attorney General Jeff Milsteen, board members offered advice and addressed issues such as the commitment of states to provide faculty, Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit, alternative funding sources, and evaluations. Smaller groups discussed in depth more specific topics such as trial and litigation skills course development, research priorities, special area programs, training delivery methods, faculty development, managerial programs, and the development of a career course for assistant attorneys general. Al Lama from the New Mexico Attorney General’s Office, Laurie Lyte from the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, Judy Zeprun Kalman from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, Brendan Ruane from the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office and NAGTRI staff facilitated the small group meetings.

Board members determined the NAGTRI course schedule for 2011-2012, discussed the development of new courses, and outlined priorities for on-line support. The Board was also addressed by Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller, who provided his thoughts on the future of NAGTRI. Attorney General Zoeller is one of three co-chairs of the NAAG Training Committee. This Committee, approved by the NAAG Executive Committee at the 2011 Summer Meeting, will provide governance and oversight of NAGTRI through NAAG’s executive director and NAGTRI director. The other co-chairs are Hawaii Attorney General David Louie and Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley.
