NAGTRI Co-Sponsors Charities Conference

Fifty-one charities regulators from 35 states and America Samoa gathered at Columbia University in New York City March 24 and 25 to learn about new technological advances that impact investigatory techniques and nonprofit fundraising. At the Intersection of Technology, the Charitable Sector and State Regulators focused on issues that currently impact charities and their regulators, such as data privacy, fundraising through new technologies, including social media and data aggregation, and investigatory methods of collecting and admitting social media evidence. The expert panelists included Julie Brill, Federal Trade commissioner, and Peter Panepento, assisting managing editor of the Chronicle of Philanthropy.

This is the third conference that the National Attorneys General Training and Research Institute (NAGTRI) of NAAG has co-sponsored with the Charities Regulation and Oversight Project of the National State Attorneys General Program at Columbia Law School. With the majority of funds generously donated by the NAAG Mission Foundation, NAGTRI provided scholarships to deputy and assistant attorneys general to attend the conference. Previous jointly-sponsored programs have discussed fraud in the charitable sector and analyzed the nuts and bolts of an investigation. These conferences have provided a forum in which to meet and exchange knowledge and experience.
