September 11th Message

American Flag

As our nation remembers the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the entire membership of the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) remains committed to fulfilling the vital responsibilities of the Office of Attorney General --- to serve as the chief legal officers of our respective jurisdictions and to ensure the safety and welfare of all of our citizens. We continue to mourn the tremendous loss of innocent lives, property and the sense of peace destroyed by the work of terrorists. The tragedies that occurred in Washington, D.C., New York and in Pennsylvania continue to have a profound impact on this country and, subsequently, the work that must continue by Attorneys General and other members of the legal and law enforcement communities.

NAAG continues to keep this issue at the forefront of the national agenda, as Attorneys General from around the country meet with federal officials and push for additional federal and state protections that will ensure greater security for Americans, while maintaining guaranteed freedoms and liberties.

Today, especially, Attorneys General honor the fallen heroes of September 11. We will continue to forge ahead, enforcing current laws, advocating changes to existing laws and proposing new federal and state legislation that ensures sound legal prosecution for those who may commit such cruel and unjust acts against citizens in the future. It is a cooperative effort that will continue to involve local and state law enforcement, who are often at the front lines responding to any disaster or tragedy. Together, we can ensure that the loss of life on September 11 is never forgotten.
