Debt Collection Continues to Plague Consumers

The financial crisis five years ago put many consumers in financial distress as millions lost their jobs, homes, or suffered other losses. As consumers fell behind on their credit cards and other debts, an explosion in the collection of these debts surfaced.

New Attorneys General Orientation and Annual Meeting Held
NAAG held its New Attorneys General Orientation and Fall Annual Meeting in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Nov. 26-29. It is the only NAAG Annual Meeting just for attorneys general, their staff and invited speakers.

New Maine Attorney General to Start in January
The Maine legislature elected Democrat Janet Mills on Dec. 5 to serve as attorney general, with her two-year term beginning in January. She previously served one term as Maine attorney general in 2009-2010.

Disaster Preparedness Manual Available for AG Offices
In January 2012, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi’s office hosted both a National Attorneys General Training and Research Institute (NAGTRI) workshop as well as the National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) Southern Regional meeting in Tampa were on the topic of disaster preparedness. From the meetings’ discussion and work, NAGTRI produced “Preparing for the Unexpected: A Disaster Preparedness Manual and Resource Guide for State Attorneys General.”
