Student Loan Issues Come to the Fore

Prior to the 1978 Bankruptcy Code (“the Code”), student loans could be discharged like other unsecured debts. Initially, loans could be discharged after five years or upon a showing of undue hardship. In 1979, the law was amended to except any period during which payments had been deferred from counting into the five-year calculation. In the last few years, though, there have been increasing concerns about whether changes need to be made to the overall system of student loans and bankruptcy discharges.

Attorneys General Discuss the Economic Impact of Enforcement In Evolving Marketplaces
The NAAG Midwestern Region held its biannual meeting April 23-24 in Chicago. Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller, Midwestern Region chair, Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt, Midwestern Region vice chair, and Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, the host Attorney General, brought together over 65 participants to discuss the economic factors of the marketplace and how legislation and regulation impacts those factors.

Draft Federal Rules on “Fracking”
