Tierrel “TJ” Mathis joined NAAG as a NAGTRI program counsel in June 2022. She began her legal career, in 2014, as a prosecutor at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office (“SAO”) in Miami, Florida. There she prosecuted various offenses including domestic violence, theft/robberies, welfare fraud, and homicides. During her time with the SAO, she served as the chief of litigation & assistant division chief of the Misdemeanor Domestic Violence Unit. TJ trained over 200 new attorneys on how to ethically litigate criminal cases throughout her tenure at the SAO. Towards the end of her time with the State, TJ was selected to join the Northside and Miami Gardens’ Gun Violence Reduction Initiative where she worked alongside detectives to help produce better prosecutable cases. In 2020, TJ continued her career in criminal prosecution when she joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office (“USAO”) for a two-year term as an assistant united states attorney. At the USAO, TJ handled a variety of cases that ranged from possession of firearms, drugs, and child pornography to economic crimes, fraud, and immigration related offenses.
TJ received her undergraduate degree from Florida State University and her law degree from Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University College of Law and is a member of the Florida Bar. She was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida. TJ enjoys skating, traveling and spending time with her family and friends who are family.
